I have another thread going discussing air in my pool ever since the SWG got started up last week. There is significant air coming out of my returns when the SWG is active, but not when it's off. Is this normal?

Bubbles in the returns when the SWG is producing is normal. It is a byproduct of chlorine production. Hydrogen gas if I am not mistaken.
I have bubbles too. Should be mostly Hydrogen as svenpup states ... could be some chlorine gas as well, but much less likely.

Whenever I am near the pool and I see those bubbles, I shout "BUBBLES! BUBBLES!" ala the Stephen Root character from Finding Nemo.
That's quite a bit more than I get. I get a steady microfine stream that you can barely even see. Does it bubble like that for a little while, stop for a little while and then start again? If so, maybe the gas is building up somewhere in the lines, gets pushed out all at once and then the process repeats?
Check your filter. When mine begins to get clocked and pressure builds, flow goes down and my SWG starts to build up gas. I then get lots of bubbles at the discharges. When my filter is clean and flowing strong, no bubbles.
It's hydrogen gas. Hold a lighter down there where they are popping and it sound like Rice Crispies.
