I was removing the head on my pool filter and I managed to pull the stand pipe up. Do I have to empty the filter? Can I reuse the sand that's in there? It's a Sta Rite T240 BP1.

Yes you are going to have to vacuum out the filter and get the laterals and pipe reset (inspect for damage). You can reuse the sand if it is not clumped up ... a good opportunity to rinse/clean the sand while it is out.
Thank you, in this case does all the sand need to come out or will the laterals go down far enough with some still in the bottom?
I have no idea, but guessing that nearly all of it needs to come out since I think the laterals sit on the bottom.
That's fair, I should have asked about the vacuum. Do you mean a conventional wet/dry shop vac?
The sand is wet so I'm scooping it out by hand, I've got the stand pipe and laterals out. I can't find any reference to cleaning sand when it's not in the filter, any suggestions?
put it in a bucket and run a hose through it so any gunk spills out ... same as the Deep Cleaning your Sand Filter process.
