New guy 1st pool

Bought this 17x48 pool and filled it with tap water. Went to store and got a test kit.
Aqua Chem smart strips. Need idea. Dip it and upload it and it tells me what's going on. I did it and it recommends alot of chemicals already. Could this be right? Check it please.

Welcome to TFP!

No water testing system that uses test strips is reliable enough to be useful. You will be far better off getting one of the test kits we recommend.

What all have you added since you filled? It has your CYA at 250. That is pretty high for a new fill.

Exactly what I was going to say!! Theres no way you have CYA at 250 with a fresh tap water fill alone.

The test kit most recommended here is the TF-100 available online. I doubt if you will find it in a pool store. Some information about your pool would be helpful. Gallons, Fiberglass/Vinyl/Gunite, Pump Size, Type and Size filter, and info about any other equipment you have.

Just filled with tap water. Nothing added.
Cheepo pool. 16'x48" round 5100gal. Stock cartridge filter for now. 1500gph.

Reading about all this makes my head hurt. I don't need a new hobby/project just trying to keep kids happy. Is salt a better alternative. Don't mind spending a little more for less hassle.

Keep/maintain about 2ppm FC for now. Use PoolMath to figure the doses. Post back if you need help.

Here is the El cheepo Kmart test kit results until new kit gets here.


Got a lot of rain here today and pool looking kinda green. All that has been added since fill is two 1" chlorine tabs.

2 1" tabs probably won't get you to 2ppm as previously recommended. You need to get some bleach in there soon before the green gets out of hand.

According to that posted drop kit and this strip kit it's currently over 5ppm. Right?
