    Cloudy aqua blue water

Hey guys. I need a bit of help. I have a pro series metal frame 16x48 AG.

I used to have crystal clear water, however, we had a couple of weeks of pouring rain that prevented me from maintaining my pool & ended up getting a green pool.

I shocked it yesterday with 2 bags of aqua chem shock xtra blue & ran my pump (it's the one that came with the pool so not sure of size, but uses paper filters) over night & all day today. This morning there was still some green, went a vacuumed with brush. Green is completely gone, but water is so cloudy I can't see the bottom at all.

I only have the test strips cuz I can not afford to get the good one right now. According to test strip (which I know is not accurate) total hardness is about 250, total chlorine is a 1, free chlorine 3, bromine is 6, ph is 6.8, alkalinity is 40, & stabilizer is 0.

Can I just use regular chlorine bleach for right now to rid the cloudiness until I can get the good test kit?

Should I try turning my pump off for awhile to see if it all goes to the bottom of the pool before or after the bleach?

5000 gallon pool how much bleach? It's been almost in the 3 digits here in Panama City, florida so pool is not really all that cold but my daughter wants to get in it anyway even though water is warm it's still wet.

Lol! Thank you for what little bit of advice I can get without correct readings.

    Welcome to the forum

First, with a small pool, you might want to consider a dump and refill.

With the small intex pump/filter, it could be difficult to clear the pool.

Yes, you can use plain bleach/liquid chlorine. That's what most of us use all the time.

For calculating doses, use PoolMath. Link in menu bar at top of each page.

Here's a link to Seasonal/Small Pools to get you started. After you read this, post back with any questions:

I went ahead and bit the bullet and bought the kit. I do not want to drain my pool as was suggested by article. Had to do that once already when setting up the pool. Takes way too long & too much cost for electricity. Have well water. So while I wait for my test kit to get here, do you think I can just add some bleach to try & get rid of the cloudiness? I used calculator & it says to use 6% of 96 oz bottle. I'm not sure how much that is? I need a temporary fix til my test kit gets here, if there is one. Thank you.

Okay guess there is no temporary fix and I'm just gonna have to wait for the test kit. Really wanted to get in it today or at least by tomorrow. Shoot.

I have problems with numbers myself, is total chlorine 3 and free chlorine 1?

I would say that it is not safe to swim in that. Unfortunately there is no quick fix either. Not much help can be provided without proper test results. We're not trying to "force" you to buy test kits here....it's just that most advice given here can only be given from accurate test results....

While you are waiting for your test kit to arrive, you can add 1/3 of a 96 oz jug of 6% bleach to your pool every day. This will at least slow down the algae growth until you can get accurate test results.

Check these sections of Pool School while you are waiting:

And if you are planning to take your pool down for your "winter", you may also need this one:

Sorry if I came off snippy or insinuating that you were forcing me. That was not my intention nor do I think that at all. Sometimes I do not word things correctly when I am typing. My sincere apologies. I am just frustrated with what has happened & sometimes a bit inpatient. Lol! I have ordered the test kit & have read the articles galore that are on here & I am just going to keep trying.

I have no idea. I didn't but my mother in law might have. She bought the place & everything had to be inspected. Didn't have any problems with water in pool till we got a bunch of rainstorms for like 2 weeks. Kept me from maintaining it.
