    Conflicting rules

Ok, looking at posting pictures for this year; however, I couldn't remember size etc...
Obvious place to look... the rules:
    Rules: Attachments
OK, got the size and the photobucket thing...
Yet there is a stick about hotlinking
    and then there's the tutorial

What I don't get is that we're admonished on one hand for hotlinking and yet, isn't that exactly what we're doing when we insert [img][/img] from photobucket or the equivalent?

No, those two aren't the same at all. Hotlinking is when you don't have the right to link to the photo and are effectively stealing their bandwidth. If you link to your own PhotoBucket account, you are doing so with permission. PhotoBucket encourages forum linking and you presumably have the rights to the photo.
