Hey! New to the forum. Having major issues with pool, after spending several hundred dollars - discovered you guys! We have now been cleaning debris out of pool. Can't see the bottom but are doing the best we can. We have an 20 x 40 Rectangular Pool - Did not open last year - but left filter running - Started with "Creature from the Black Lagoon" Water and got it to cloudy blue - until we started stirring up the bottom. Now its light green again. Clorine is registering at 0 and Stabilizer at low. Ph / Alk - OK. Been trying to figure out SLAM'ing and Bleach. Help!!!

Welcome to TFP.
in order to SLAM, you need a good test kit. You will need to test multiple time a day and sometimes late evening and very early morning, and night time.
Pool store testing and cheap strips are not up to the challenge, in either availability, or accuracy.
here is a link to the test kits that will do the job and are recommended by everyone on this forum. The TF-100 is the best deal because it can do larger quantaties of tests than the others. www.tftestkits.net.
If you are going straight into a SLAM, you will need the XL option. Otherwise, you may run out of the R0871 before the SLAM is finished and your water sparkly. Not a good situation.
Getting a test kit is step 1. No need to even start without it.
Slamming is a process. Its not a one time hit, depending on your water, it can take quite a few days.
step 2, is test the water with your kit and post the numbers here. Depening on your tests will depend on how much chlorine to add.
Also, learn how to work the pool calculator. Add your pool gallons in top left and pool type at the bottom.
The NOW column will be the result of your test.
The GOAL column will be what you want the level to be after addition of chemical.
The calculacator will tell you how much and what to add.

The SLAM process is simply keeping your FC at a high level for an extended period of time until ALL of the algae is killed. All of it!
Its pretty much just that simple but you will need a lot of patience.
As a FYI, Bleach is an alternative method of delivering Sodium Hypochlorite to your pool. Sodium Hypochlorite is chlorine.
Bleach does not contain stabilizer like powder shock does
Powder shock is sodium hypochlorite with high amounts of stabilizer added
Tabs are sodium hypochlorite with high amounts of stabilizer added
Liquid Shock as may be found in pool store and other places is nothing more than bleach with a higher concentration of sodium hypochlorite.
Excessive addition of Stabilizer, usually added while traditional shocking such as the pool store recmmends can raise the CYA so high, that is becomes impossible to manage and you go looking for help.

Step 3, while you are waiting for a Test Kit, clean all of the leaves you possibly can from the pool with a net. Leaves and other solid organic material in the pool make the SLAM go slower, so get all of it you can out.
