Sand filter and chlorine burn rate

This may be a dumb question: If organic matter in the pool eats chlorine and the sand filter catches organic matter, will a dirty sand filter (say one that hasn't had the sand cleaned in 5 years) increase the burn rate of chlorine as the water moves through it? I suppose it must, but after awhile the stuff trapped in the filter eventually stops eating the chlorine, but then it keeps piling on so who knows...It's just a thought my brain cell had while I was doing the SLAM to my pool.
