I have a Pentair Sand Dollar SD60 sand filter. My pump died so I'm trying to size a new one but I can't figure out what the head loss from the filter is. Can anyone help me?

Pump size is not really dependant on your filter size. Just get a 1 HP 2 speed pump, or replace the motor on your existing pump.

How do I ensure that the pump won't run at a higher flow rate (60gmp) than the filter is rated for? The pumps I've looked at list flow rate as a function of head, which I was assuming was mostly related to the filter. The plumbing must factor in, too, but we don't have long runs. It's 1.5" plumbing.

Calculating head loss is not very easy. Just get the smallest 2 speed pump you can find and you will not have a problem.
