    Pump replacement help needed

I currently have a Hayward super 2 pump with a ao smith b809 2 hp motor on it. I would like to replace the motor with a 2 speed motor. The pool is 26000 gallons. Do I need a 2 hp motor or can I downsize? Can anyone point me to the correct motor.
    Thanks

Downsizing might be possible but it depends your setup.

Do you have a spa, water fall or any other high flow water feature?

If not, then yes, you could probably downsize but you would need to downsize both the motor and impeller.

I have a waterfall but it is on a separate pump. Any idea on what motor I could go with. If I stay with a 2 hp would the ao smith b2979. Would this work? Also what timer would I need?

It depends. What is the service factor of the old motor? Super II comes in both full and up rated versions. Also, what voltage is it currently wired for?

Service factor was 1.25 full rated. Could I put an ecotech 1.5 in?

EcoTech 1.5 in. ? Or did you mean a 1.5 HP. You could if you down size the impeller for the appropriate THP (service factor * HP).

I ordered an Ecotech 1.5 EZ last Friday from Hydro pool, it has 1.6 service factor (2.4 THP), I am also replacing my 2 HP single speed motor. I calculated my return of investment with mas985 worksheet, I should get mine in 13 to 14 months.

Yes I meant 1.5 hp? Would this be a good choice over a 2 speed. I would not have to buy another timer if I went this route.

Time will tell on the reliability of the motor but for any VS, if you live in an area with lightning, you should probably add surge protection to protect your investment.

Thanks. What else will I need to replace? I will order the motor, 1.5 hp impeller, and seal kit. Anything I am missing?

    Re: Pump replacement help needed

That should do it, just make sure that you get the 56J version of the EZ. Also, I think you could use the 1.5 EZ with your current impeller if you never run it at full speed. The HP ratings are so close that it shouldn't be an issue. Just limit the RPM to 3400 and you should be fine. Plus the controller has overload protection.

I already have a whole house surge protector installed near my main breaker, is that sufficient?

It should if it has lightning protection. But you should make sure that the pool service panel actually goes through the SP. It isn't a given.

I am going to get the ecotech. Should I get the 3 hp or the 1.5 hp. They are about the same price.
    Thanks

I went with 1.5 hp for $329 from hydropool, if the price is close enough yeah 3 HP is good option in my opinion, which store you are looking at?

1stoppoolsupply.com has the 3hp for $351 plus about $40 shipping. I already ordered the 1.5 hp but could return it if the 3 hp is worth the extra $.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Should I get the 3 hp or the 1.5 hp? If the pump is going to be run at the lower rates does it really matter?
    Thanks

I can only repeat what I posted before. I am not sure what other information you might need. If it has shipped already, there is no reason to return it.
