I am replacing a 10 year old Jandy pool heater. The pool company has recommended a Hayward pool heater. I have looked at reviews online and there seem to be a lot of complaints about circuit boards failing with Hayward heaters. What is a good durable pool heater for a 25,000 gallon in ground pool in northern Illinois? Also, what Btu heater should I choose?

Look at a Raypak. Yes the Haywards have lots of issues.
