pump ran 6hrs with no water

I set my pump to waste since it was raining and i manually drained my pool a few inches. Long story short it ran for 6 hours with no water. I leave the skimmer open all the way and the main drain half open.

I checked this morning immediately after seeing the water right below the skimmer line. I turned it on briefly after closing the skimmer and opening the main drain. I saw no water coming out.

What am I in here for?

Does the pump try to prime when you turn it on? Any action at all?

So it sounds like its trying to prime. I set the multiport to closed and open the pump and add water with a hose. It seems to suck water and it fills up but then it loses its prime

I dont know how to prime it

Set the multiport to filter and make sure the skimmer is full. Fill the pump basket with water and close it. It should catch in twenty or thirty seconds.

Re: pump ran 6hrs with no water

The pump does not lose its prime but it is having small issues. The pump has very little air inside (very tiny bubbles). Once every 10 seconds I see a large gush of water come in through the t slot/3 way connection, which results in bubbles but they instantly disappear.

The reason I say gush is because that is what it sounds like. Any advice?

Have you bled the air out of the filter?

Re: pump ran 6hrs with no water

When a pump runs dry it gets very hot. Many of the plastic parts deform when they get hot, resulting in leaks. You might be lucky and have an end result you can live with, but chances are the main pump body needs to be replaced.

Karma, I did bleed out the air in the filter.

Jason, are you saying I should replace my pump housing and keep all of the interior components (excluding seals, ect)? The previous home owners purchased it in 2012 I believe.

Re: pump ran 6hrs with no water

You may need to do that, or maybe not. It depends on how much it deformed. After 6 hrs running dry it is unusual for it to be usable at all.
