I recently purchased a house with a pool. I am trying to get the pool opened and my pool guy does not know what this device is. It's in the skimmer that is closest to the spa. Anyone know what it is?

Sorry, it is tough taking a picture of it with the reflections from the sun.
It appears to be about a 2" pipe feeding into the side of the skimmer (near the top). There is a cover over the pipe with a black nipple sticking out into the skimmer basket area. If you look above the red arrow, you can see the threads where the pipe comes in. It has a screw-on cover with the nipple part.

looks to me like a capped off pipe with chain on it so the cap doesn't fall down into the skimmer.
OK, that would make sense. The skimmer is a STA-RITE model. I don't see any models with a pipe feed like this. Does something attach to the pipe?
