Brushing my pool

New to TFP and love it. I'm not a complete newbie, starting my fourth season. I'm getting everything balanced, and my water looks fabulous. Now I have a dumb question. What does it mean to brush your pool? I have a brush, but I have never used it. Should I brush the side the bottom (both)? Makes sense to stir in the chemicals, but what else is it for? I vacuum my pool, is that like brushing it?

Welcome to the forum. Brushing helps keep any biofilm from forming and thus helping to reduce any algae taking hold. Sides and bottom--------flossing optional.

It's sort of like pushing a swiffer around on a wood floor, but much harder on the arms, shoulders, and lower back.

Brushing is the pool equivalent of dusting - you'll probably be amazed at the cloud of stuff you disturb. For whatever reason, dust likes to cling to the walls. Don't ask me why it doesn't fall off with gravity.
