Sodium Bicarbonate vs Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate

    Hi All
I need to raise my total alkalinity. I usually use sodium bicarbonate. While at a different supplier they sold me Sodium Hydrogen carbonate. The salesman told me they were interchangeable and safe for a chlorine pool. They are a big Baquasil store.
    Can I use it?
My pool is 41K concrete and I use chlorine. I'm in NJ.
    Thanks

    Couple questions....

First and foremost, what are your latest test results, and why are you raising TA?

Second, how are you chlorinating the pool? Liquid chlorine, dry chlorine?

Third, you said usually above....how often are you raising TA, and again, what is driving that decision?

Fourth, any reason you're not just buying baking soda from the grocery store?

Like Dave said, different names, same thing, Sodium Bicarbonate is just an older scientific naming style that has stuck for this fairly common compound. Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate is perhaps a clear more concise term for its actual make up.

Re: Sodium Bicarbonate vs Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate

There's a HUGE difference in the two:

Baking Soda, 12 lb bag at Walmart, $7.57
Alkalinity UP, 10 lb Bucket at Leslie's $21.99

Although that makes the bucket pretty darn expensive.

Troublefree does not mean Maintenancefree. It's like brushing your teeth: You can spend a couple minutes a day and pennies a week or go to the dentist once a year and spend several thousand dollars.
A pool is like a pet - you have to feed it every day, even the days you don't want to play with it!
