filter trap not holding water

My filter trap is not holding water. Every time I have to start up the filter I have to open the trap and let water in to start the filter anyone know why??? Now this morning the o ring broke and water is everywhere and I was rushing out to buy a new o ring...not a good pool morning. Am I doing something wrong? I am a new pool owner and have read all the manuals and thought I understood the trap should always have water in it to run the filter please help

Are you referring to the pump strainer basket? It's got the clear, removable lid on the front of the pump.

If you pump is below the water level (signature says it is an AG pool), then it should stay full of water ... no priming required. Does the pump empty when you turn the motor on? Or is it emptying while the motor is off?

it emptys when its off. but we did fig out the problem apparently because we didn't lube the o ring it wasn't sitting in there the right way and we had a leak thanks that was an all day trouble shooting process but I did finally fig it out
