    115v 1hp 2 speed motor availability?

    Hello,

I have a 25,000 gallon inground with an old single speed hayward superpump running on 115v with motor specs: 1hp, s.f. is 1.5, round flange, model ST1102. I'd like to put put a 2 speed motor on it, but can't find a 1hp 115v. Do i need to get 230v out to the pump or does someone out there have a vendor suggestion?

    thanks in advance,
    Scott

    Welcome to TFP!!!

I think I have seen others find 115V 2-speed motors. It would take some searching, but should be possible to find them.

A B969 should be what you are looking for. It is a 1.5 HP up rated motor which is the same as a 1 HP full rated motor that you have:

    http://www.poolpartsonline.com/p-821...FVGVfgodi2QA3w

    http://www.amazon.com/1725rpm-Frame-...rds=B969+motor

Also it is a little easier to find a 3/4 HP full rated 115v 2 speed motor than a 1 HP so if you are willing to downsize your impeller, that is another option. Not to mention saving even more money on energy.

I'm all for saving money! How do I go about deciding which impeller to use?

It should be on the parts list of the pump. What is your pump (not motor) make/model#?

I looked at the pump last night and if there is not a nomenclature plate. I'm guessing it's one of the first style Hayward super pumps. It has the square basket in it. By the way I have 1 1/2" lines, one skimmer, two return jets at the shallow end of pool and an inlet at deep end. The pool was built in 1986, nothing fancy just rectangular 36' x 16'. I also have Hayward sand filter (i think 100-150lbs of sand). The filter sand probalaby needs replacing, right now the pressure is ~20psi when the filter is running.

Filter sand hardly ever needs replaced. You may want to follow the sand cleaning sticky though.

So assuming your pump looks like this:

Then your parts are here: http://www.hayward-pool.com/pdf/Part...Super-Pump.pdf

You should currently have a SPX2610 impeller and it sounds like you want a SPX2607 impeller.

    http://www.amazon.com/Hayward-SPX260...ywords=SPX2607

With that impeller, you can then use a B973 motor. It is a larger diameter motor than what you have now but the SuperPump should have a removable support so a larger diameter motor can be used but you should check the pump support to make sure.

Don't forget a new seal kit too:

Yes, thats the pump. Mine is just faded and the motor shell is rusty...
Thank you very much for all this information. One question : do i need to changed the diffuser as well if i change the impeller?

In this case the diffuser does not need to be changed.

    Re: 115v 1hp 2 speed motor availability?

I'm thinking of using this motor with a built in timer/switch. The part number is B973T. One reviewer of the motor said it is not compatible with older wiring systems...I don't know what that means. I have 115v, which is pretty simple and standard of course. Anybody have any comments on these motors. The price is only about $10 more than a motor without the electronics. Thanks for all the help so far.

    Re: 115v 1hp 2 speed motor availability?

I got the motor installed yesterday. (I ended up buying the 3/4 full rated with a down sized impeller). The biggest headache was dealing with the existing house to pump wiring, but that is covered in another thread.

There were two quirks mounting this motor. It does have a larger diameter than the original super pump motor so i had to remove the little support bracket(easily pulls out) from the super pump base and file down the remaining bracket, just a little bit, maybe 10 minutes of filing. The other is that you need to put the two top motor mounting bolts through the motor mounting plate BEFORE you mount the plate. The motor mounting bolts won't fit between the timer/controller box that is sitting on top of this motor if you mount the plate on first...i found out the hard way.

Other than that the motor is quiet and even on high speed doesn't get nearly as hot as my old motor The timer interface is very user friendly. It's actually easier to just start pushing buttons than reading the step by step instructions on how to program the pump .

Also, when it's running on high speed the sand filter pressure is the same as it was with my old 1hp and my polaris 360 works fine. The polaris will move around the pool on slow speed , but it is very slow.
