Pool dimensions (sizes, depths, steps)

We are building a pool this summer, would appreciate any feedback on sizes:

Rectangle pool size 18x36 (this is set, can potentially change to 18x38)
Depth 3.5' to 8'
Steps (vinyl over steel): 12" risers, 18' width (across entire side), not sure on length

Questions and opinions:
What is the typical pool step length (ie how much of the 36' pool length will 3 steps take?) what do you recommend?

We're pretty set on 3.5' on shallow end but deep end (and where to best start the transition) is giving us a hard time (want to leave as much shallow end as possible). Thoughts on whats a good slope and where to start the transition? Is it better to have a gradual slope all the way?

This wont be a diving pool so can potentially go shallower on deep end to have more functional space, thoughts?

Thanks!

Since it's not a diving pool, you could certainly go out more with your break point. Is this a DIY project?
