I've read where some have suggested bumping up the chlorine levels before and after a heavy load of bathers. My CYA is 40, I target 3-5 PPM chlorine on a daily basis. What would the figure suggested for a heavy bather load?

I would bring it up to 7 or 8 30-60 min before people will get in. Up to 10 would be fine as well (remember, it's safe to swim up to SLAM level).

If it's going to be an all afternoon deal, you may want to test the FC after a couple hours.

I agree, bump it to 8 and right back up there when you are done. Checking two hours in is a great idea as well.

In warmer weather my pool takes a 1/2 gallon every 3 days with minor swimming.
I can get 12.5% so 1 gallon is about 5 PPM addition of chlorine.
If the family comes over on a weekend to swim, I dump a gallon in.
I keep my chlorine in the 4-6 range, so this will bring it to around 10.
Never had a problem and no complaints.

8 is my target level due to 4 ppm loss daily and it's always at 8 preceeding a party and check afterwards..(or the next day early--------ok, sometimes later!).

Same thing before a big rain is coming to.
