Should I add liquid chlorine or let SWG handle it?

Hello,

I have installed a new SWG - Hayward Swimpure Plus with t-15 salt cell. Today morning I did start it for the first time.
My SWG is set at 50%. The salt level is currently at 3200 ppm. This tested by using the Aquachek test strips. The instant salinity indicator on the diagnostics display on the Swimpure plus equipment is at -3400.

FC is at 1. (color matches 1-2 on the comparator and is showing 1 based on the chlorine drop test)
The question is - should I add liquid chlorine to get FC up to 3 - 5 ppm?

My Other numbers:

TA - 100
CYA - 70
pH - 7.2
CH - Not tested yet - but should be high.

I am thinking that the lower pH should rise and bring down the TA to an optimal level of 60-80 ppm. I have a water feature through which the water does flow back to the pool and gets aerated in that process. This should help me in getting the TA down. Please do let me know if my approach is wrong.

All of the test results are based on TFTestkits. I re-ordered the chemicals for this season.

Yes, add LC to bring your level up to your target. The SWG can't do it on it's own, without shortening it's life a bit.

Mentally prepare yourself for still having to add LC. Mine went lime green a few times before I figured it out.


As far as setting goes you'll have to feel it out. After awhile you'll get it pegged down. Mine is happy at around 30% most of the time. It can vary with bather load and how much junk gets blown in from the wind storms.

With colder temps too, it doesn't run all the time...keep that in mind. Mine doesn't kick on until water temp is at least 55.

Aeration will increase your pH without increasing TA. It won't, however, decrease your TA at all!

Uh oh.... I thought the pool calc said to reduce the TA - bring down the pH between 7.0 and 7.2 and to aerate. Have I misunderstood? If so what would be the way to reduce TA?

you need to calculate your run time and percentage time using poolmath http://www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html to get your ppm chlorine added
eg i have a 25 gram cell and 13,000 gallon pool, 4 hours at 50 percent equals 1ppm per day
also for 75 cya your minimum free chlorine is 3.5ppm and your target should be 5.5 http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/128-chlorine-cya-chart-slam-shock
you are about to turn green, dump liquid chlorine in NOW

Yes I did add LC and brought FC up to 5.

TA of 100 is fine for now, you can worry about it later. For now, concentrate on getting FC where it needs to be.

You use muriatic acid to bring down the pH which also reduces the TA, then aerate to bring the ph back up.
