Variable speed pumps are generally only worth the extra up front costs if your electric rates are above $0.15/kWh.

There are currently two classes of variable speed pumps, the larger more expensive more configurable versions and some newer smaller pumps that have limited control options. The larger pumps are much better when being used with automation systems, since they integrate well with the automation. The smaller pumps are best when you have a simple timer and they also cost less, which means they pay back the initial investment more quickly, but they integrate very poorly with automation systems.

Just to add, if your power is not that expensive, often a smaller 2-speed pump is the way to go. Cheaper up front and save a majority of the electrical costs.

The cheapest option, is to just replace your motor with a 2-speed version and use your existing wet end of the pump if it is still in good shape (yours is only 6 years old so this could be an option). Adding the "go-kit" will allow you to replace all the seals in the pump as well.
