I just saw part of an infomercial for NuvoH20. It claims to be a salt-free water softener system. It claims to do this using citric acid chelation.

Would something like this help pool owners who have hard fill water and/or metal laden well water keep metal sequestered and the pH down?

No, that could work for homes but will not work for swimming pools. They do not remove calcium/metals from the water the way a normal water softener does. Instead, they use citric acid to essentially remove stains/scale as quickly as they form. The citric acid only lasts a few minutes. In a residential system where water is used as right away that can work, but in a swimming pool the citric acid will break down rather quickly and them you will get stains/scale just as normal.
