Current option is that borates were previously overstated. They can be helpful to slow the pH rise if your TA is reasonable, but the other qualities are quite subjective.

The prevalent challenges I face are a considerable acid thirst and sudden algae growth.
My pebble tech is a very light color so I thought I would be OK.
What happens is, along about the end of June, the water temp starts pushing past the low 80's.
This is usually my signal to run the aerator at night to lower the water temp. Then of course the acid usage goes way up.
And what led me to TPF is that all your chemistry appears correct, when overnight you have furry sides of the pool and black spots on the bottom.
Pool store folks shrug their shoulders and want to sell you all sorts of mysterious algae cures.

Armed with BBB I have not had a serious problem since.
