    anyone seen this before?

    Ice has finally started to break up on my pool.

    Here's a few pics of what I've found. Each individual crystal is roughly hexagonal shaped, and were vertical in the water. I've only seen sheet ice on ponds and pool before, so this threw me for a loop a bit.





    15'x48" 4500 gallon Intex pool, buried 1.5 ft. Pac-Fab Dynamo 3/4 hp pump. Hayward S180T sand filter, bought used. Taylor K-2006 test kit. Rocket mass heater based wood fired pool heater.

    Hmmm...very odd. I don't know what would cause that. It seems that there would have to be something to mold the ice into that shape.

    That is weird. Interesting, but I have no idea what would cause it.

    I'm going to blame aliens.

    That's really cool/strange, and aliens seem like the only logical cause.

    Size: 12'-21'x39' free form, depth ranging from 4' to 7, attached 6 person spa with spillover.
    Equipment: Whisperflo 2hp pump, Pentair 30" sand filter, Pentair Mastertemp 400k BTU heater, 1hp Whisperflo for waterfalls, and a blower for spa floor

    The only thing that I can think of that might have created this is possibly the rapid freeze/thaw cycles we've been through this winter. High in the 60s one day and 20s the next, along with prolonged -- for our area -- below zero temps.

    Pool was covered with the mesh that you see in the pics, so that might have had something to do with it.
