TH on new plaster pool startup.

    Good day all.

It's now the morning of day two 24hrs since top up of a new plaster pool 24 000 litres. SWG. Cartridge filter. Eco 3 speed pump. I am a feeling a little apprehensive about the start up.

That is .I haven't a 'good kit' in hand. The pool was supposed to have been done only in a months time due to the renderers being that busy but they snuck us in and I had hoped to have a kit here before then.

However I did check out a few pool stores before now and the one I now use test with Taylor test reagents etc. for all except for an electronic tester for Ph. They also supplied my equipment and are one of the oldest and established in the area. They look after a lot of commercial and residential pools in our area. I am still deciding where to get the K-2006C kit from in the USA. AdelaidePooler has spurred me on as he has just had his arrive from the USA.

Have checked the plaster startup guide here but was wondering about TH. I had a recommendation from another builder to increase TH right away to help stop calcium leaching from new plaster which may compromise long term strength?

So wondering if there was any benefit in this approach? Would calcium still leach resulting in too high a level over time I wonder?

    FWIW

I took a sample to the Pool shop. Guys at the counter sat on the fence for a bit about the TH idea and then recommended to take it up to 150 with Calcium Chloride.

They read the levels from water sample taken just after pool was filled at. Basically our tap water I suppose.

Ph 8.4 Meter actually read above 9? They did encourage slow intro of chlorine so may have dumbed it down for their software? Something like a cup ore two a day dependent on testing until SWG is switched on after 28days.

    They suggested the following:

    Day1

    1.4l Liquid Chlorine
    1.1kg CYA (stabiliser)
    3.8kg Soduim Bicarbonate (Buffer)

    Day2
    360mls liquid acid (muriatic)
    3.9kg Calcuim Chloride

Any feed back or help appreciated.

    Welcome to TFP!!!

So which of the 3 kinds of start up listed in the Pool School article is being done with your pool?
You need to get a test kit ASAP.

    Thanks Jason.

I did not have a solid plan (or kit ordered) in place as the pool was supposed to be plastered in a months time. The pool was half build when I bought my house. Shell only. No pool builder was involved apart from the plasterers who are but specialise in the plastering. I had to replumb all bits due to some issues around pool. The start up thus far has been traditional. I was unsure of initial calcium level requirements and the addition of sequestrant.

My water is now close to being balanced according to the stores (x2) and my measurements so far but I will have a Taylor test kit in hand soon to keep more in line with TFP

    Thanks

I am surprised that the plaster company did not offer any start up procedure ... since I assume they are the ones that are carrying any warranty.

Too bad it is so hard for you guys to get a good test kit down there. Seems to be more of you on the forum this year running in to this problem.

Oh sorry...they did. It is pretty much a trad start except immediate balancing. No salt for 28days. Day 1 chlorine and acid. Day 2 Stabiliser and buffer. NO calcium to be added for first 4 weeks.

    Recommended levels
    Ph 7.2-7.6 (ideal 7.4)
    TA 100-200 (ideal120)
    TH 200-300 (ideal 250)

Brush walls and floor 2 daily.
Daily testing & balancing for first 1 week.
Testing every other day for next 3 weeks.

Re: TH on new plaster pool startup.

Hi Trevs, seems like it's all coming together somehow!
poolvacparts.com seems to be the best deal ($105 for the K-2006C and $45 shipping)

Something else to note, is that poolvacparts international priority shipping appears to be a flat fee of $45, so it may be worth getting an extra bottle of the R-0871C reagent (they sell that as well) and maybe extra CYA reagent R-0013 C, E or F (2oz, 16oz or 32oz). Adding those two extra (16oz CYA) does not change their quoted shipping price.
I have noticed that I am going through those fastest.

Unfortunately that site doesn't sell them, otherwise I would defeinitely have suggested that as well... I got mine (kit and speedstir) from Amazon and had the mail forwarded by family
