    Purpose of calcium buffer reagent

    What is the purpose of a calcium buffer reagent?

    For example, Taylor reagent R-0010.

    R-0010 is calcium buffer, a strong base which prevents interference from magnesium.

    More specifically, it's sodium hydroxide that precipitates magnesium hydroxide so that the test only measures Calcium Hardness instead of Total Hardness that would include magnesium.
