How to Winterize a Hot Tub?

Due to a family crisis, we need to "close" our hot tub - winterize it.

We follow TFP's guidelines when we close our IG pool each fall.

Having never winterized or "closed" our hot tub before - how does one do that? Anything we need to keep in mind?

We have a 560gal, AG fiberglass tub w/ standard cover that has clips. We live in Ohio where ice and freezing temps are sometimes a concern.

Do we drain it and add antifreeze to the pipes...or what?

    Thanks!

Re: How to Winterize a Hot Tub?

Hot tubs aren't really built like pools with the ease of winterization in mind. Essentially drain the tub and using a shop vac you need to blow and suck every possible inlet and outlet. Every tub is different so it's really a unique winterization for each tub. If you can access the pumps you can remove the drain plugs. Also when you got as much water out as you possibly can use a few jugs of pool/rv antifreeze in to every orifice you can to help minimize the risk of damage. Basically remove everything you can and are comfortable with get rid of the water and add antifreeze. When you are done put the cover back on and possibly a tarp over that to prevent snow from melting into the tub.

    Thank you!

We will use the wet-vac to blow the lines and try to locate the pump drains. We will get some antifreeze and dump that in.

Covering with an additional tarp was a great tip; thanks!
