Using automatic pool cover for winter

This is the first time I'm closing a new pool in Ohio. I've been told I can just use my automatic cover as my winter cover, but have concerns with weight of snow, and reduced water level to support the cover. Anyone have experience with this scenario?

I have an automatic pool cover and use it as my winter cover; been doing so for that past seven years with absolutely no issues.
