Is polyquat really necessary?

Been a BBB disciple for several seasons with great success. In the past I always opened with a quart of polyquat, dosed it every week with more polyquat, and closed with a quart of polyquat. When someone asked me the other day is I used algaecide at closing I couldn't recall adding any last year at closing. My pool has been perfect all year. So is polyquat really necessary?

I don't use it for closing or other times. However, when I close the water temp is well below 60F and I open before the water goes above 60F.

No it isn't. A lot of people open and close successfully without it year.after year.

Looked at my log...this year opened on the 24th of May, water was 62F.
