First time pool owner need help!

I month ago we purchased a house with inground pool. Pool has 17K gallons of water.
The pool was not covered properly. I pulled the cover off and found a lot of leafs
on the bottom of the pool. I used kreepy krauly to vacuum all the stuff from the bottom.
The bottom is clean now. The pool was green, went to a pool store and was told to add a lot of chlorine.

I found this forum today and started reading about the BBB method.
I still have a lot to learn, ordered the Taylor K-2006 kit today.
I am in NY state and need to clean the pool fast so that I can close it for the winter.
I added 5 gallons of chlorine and the color of the water is still green.

What is the best way to get rid of the algae? What should be my next steps?

    Thank you very much.

    Welcome to TFP!

Why do you want to clear the pool just to close it?

You may want to spend the winter learning and deal with it in the spring.

To clear the pool you need to SLAM it. [slam:3asj5jhr][/slam:3asj5jhr]

But you need test results to know they proper steps forward.

    Ok. Sounds good.
I will close the pool and deal with it in the spring.

Totally agree with jbizzle...close the pool and SLAM it in spring. In the meantime you will read through pool school 2, 3, maybe 4 times and read some forum posts to see how others get their pools crystal clear, AND keep them that way (that's the point of the BBB Method). Your pool will contract "sparkylpoolitis" and you will become a "pool snob"!!
