First Closing

I have a couple of questions on closing:

1. What are some opinions on leaving the skimmer on for the winter? ( I live in SW Pa)
2. My pool was just installed at the beginning of August, do I need to take my earth filter apart to clean it before I put it away or just backflush?

1. I leave my skimmer on (no reason to remove it), and drain the water to about 6 inches below the bottom of it.
2. Just backflushing is fine, though a good cleaning occasionally is good to do and the obvious times are at closing or at opening imo. Doing it at closing also allows you inspect the grids and order replacements if needed in time for opening.
