Closing with a sand filter

Had a great year with the new sand filter, worked excellent. Now it is time to close.

I will be using the pump to drain most of the water as the drain plug on the pool just takes way to long.

Should I drain the pool using the backwash setting to clean all the junk out of the filter while draining the pool aswell?

or

Should I just drain on waste setting?

I haven't decided if I am going to re-use the sand next year as I have not opened the filter to look at the condition of the sand. I would assume the sand is ok to use again next year.

Give it a good long backwash and then change it to waste (for the rest of the drain) to prevent stuff from building up on the wrong side of the sand.
