Adjusting return flow direction question.

OK, I feel like a bone head for not being able to figure this out.....

I can turn the eyeball fitting inside the pool no problem BUT it appears to be unthreading as I do so. Will I lose the "sandwich" seal on the pool wall between the inside and outside fittings?....or is there another flange behind the eyeball that is secured from outside the pool? The plumbing is all Hayward brand.
