Pump to Valve Alignment Question

I'm changing pump and re doing all the pump station. My previous pump suction was directly in front of the line coming in from the Skimmer. I now have a bigger pump and am wondering if the suction should stay in front of skimmer or have the suction located in front of the main drain.

Picture is the current setup.
