    safe chlorine levels

I just have a general question on chlorine. According to the pool calculater my chlorine levels should be between 8 and 14 ( due to high CYA level of 106) Im would just like to know what is the safe level for swimming??

    Re: safe chlorine levels

Not sure how you got your CYA level reading of 106 as readings from the test are in increments of 10, 100 being the maximum that it will result to, but given a CYA of 100, safe levels are no lower than 7.

    Re: safe chlorine levels

It is safe up to the shock level that depends on the CYA. So with your high CYA, it would be safe up to around 40ppm based on the chart in Pool School.

I would like to keep it around 10 untill I drain due to CYA. I just wanted to make sure that it is safe foe my grand kids to swim at that level

    Re: safe chlorine levels

I too am more concerned about how you managed to get that reading of 106 for CYA as safe Chlorine level directly depends on your CYA level since CYA acts as a Chlorine buffer

    Re: safe chlorine levels

Well, CYA happens to be the test that the pool stores are historically the worst at getting right. So, I would not trust it. Order replacement reagent.

    Re: safe chlorine levels

You might want to resupply your CYA test reagent, it is fairly cheap http://tftestkits.net/R-0013-2-CYA-Reag ... 6-p42.html

    Re: safe chlorine levels

Do you *trust* the pool stores testing?

Pool store employees may or may not have my best interests in mind when performing this task. Worst case scenario- they might deliberately lead me astray to make a sale of some odd chemical addition. Best case scenario- they might just be barely trained and have no clue what they're doing or how to interpret the results.

I trust my own using a good test kit like my TF-100 far more than a pool store's test.

oh yeah!! I dont trust them at all .I have been doing the test myself in the past and unfortunately it has hung right in the 100 range. I have not been using any chemicals including powdered chlorine that would change that so I would guess thats not too far off. I just want to make sure that Im not putting my grandchildren at risk by letting them swim at high chlorine levels.

    Re: safe chlorine levels

just ordered refill for CYA testing. In the event that I do need to keep my chlorine levels at 8 would it be reasonable to say thet I would use about a gallon of 12% bleach a day? That seems to be about what I am using right now. the pool is in full sunlight all day although there hasn't been much sun lately.

    Re: safe chlorine levels

Probably a bit less since your CYA is so high. I would speculate a 1/2 gallon might work but that's optimistic, maybe.

    Re: safe chlorine levels

I agree with duraleigh. At a cya of 80% and targeting 8 ppm as a minimum, I would expect less than 1/2 gallon per day if nothing was growing in the pool. Of course if the swimmer load is quite high each day, or if you are getting a lot of organic debris that isn't removed from the pool promptly then your usage can go up.

The SLAM process is not finished until: 1. CC < 0.5 ppm, 2. An OCLT < 1.0 ppm and, 3. The water is crystal clear.

    Re: safe chlorine levels

thank you. Everone has been so helpful to me this year. I hope I am finally starting to get control of my pool after reading the basics over and over!! Once my drain is complete and my cya is down I look forward to smooth sailing!!
