Turned Off Pump and Opened Leaf Box, tons of steam/hot water

I just turned off the pump because the pool suction did not seem to be strong and there was an endless number of air bubbles in the return lines. Then immediately after turning the pump off I opened the leaf box and lots of steam came out and the water in the leaf box was very hot. Is something wrong with my system? Is this normal? Thanks.

It's not normal. There is no water flow, which causes the water to overheat. There is probably a suction side air leak or obstruction.

That happened to me before.
Melted basket and warped the lid so it would never seal again.
Had to replace o-ring also.
Check the pipe going into the front of the pump .. Thats the uasual suspect, could be else where on the suction side.

If the basket is deformed, then the male pvc fittings going into the pump are likely to be shrunk. Once they shrink, they need to be replaced.
