Hello,
New to the board here. Typical uninformed pool owner. Until now of course.
For the first I took someones advice and went to costco to buy tabs and shock about 4 months back. Used to buy tabs and shock from my local pool store. In the last month I have been starting the battle with algea. Never really had too much of an issue before. Went to the pool store and they tested and found my CYA level is 100. For years it never was above 70. Went home and found that the costco shock is Sodium Dichlor 58%, and the tabs are trichlor 95%. All the shock I have been adding (1-2 packs per week) due to high heat and and high usage has been adding to the problem. Also was burning through those tabs at a faster rate then ever.
My goal is take care of this before my CYA levels get over 100 and out of control.
My plan, (tell me if I am way off) is stop all chlorine tabs, and shock from costco and slowly drain the pool a little at a time once a week until I get my CYA back to acceptable.
what kind of chlorine can I use besides liquid cholrine / bleach? I have been using liquid bleach for a couple years and it works great to help boost the level that my tabs maintained, but if I don't use any tabs at all or shock I will probably have to add 5-10 gallons a week just to get me to the end of the season.
Besides bleach, is there an acceptable type of shock, or powder or something I could use to help get me by for 3-4 months when the season ends?
