too much pump for sand filter tank?

a friend of mine needs a new sand filter tank, i have an extra 16" intex tank, his pump is a single speed 2HP, is that too much pump for the tank? The intex pump that comes with this setup is .95HP i believe

Yes too much pump for that size filter. What size pool does he have and is it agp or igp?

    18'x48"

For future reference for when my intex pump fails, whats the biggest pump that size filter will handle? Is a 1.5HP safe?

You probably want the smallest 2-speed agp pump pentair makes model 340203 and run in low most of the time.
