Dirt in pool when when pump running.......

[attachment=0:2yalyefs]GetAttachment.jpg[/attachment:2yalyefs]Noticed we have been having alot of dirt in the pool.....cleaned it yesterday, backwashed and rinsed and after the pump running, the dirt came back. This morning we decided to open up the sand filter after reading on here about cleaning it out. Well this is what we found when we opened it up......thinking it is all the cottonweed that doesnt seem to backwash out. It was all over the top of the sand. I am hoping this is why we are getting dirt back into the pool.

So did you let the water overflow out of the filter for awhile, or just try to scoop the stuff off the top?

We let it overflow and over turned the sand from the bottom......got alot of gunk out and I agree, totally gross !!!!

Excellent! That's the correct way to clean a sand filter and everyone should do it at the very least bi-annually with annual being preferred. You will be very glad you did that.

We are definitely going to be cleaning that once a year. The water was a dirty brown when we first started running the water through it.

Often mistaken as dirt, that could be dead algae that is dropping out onto the floor. You do not have to see live algae for it to be present.

Can you post a set of test results?

Well, we experimented today. We went and bought some skimmer socks and what we did was tape it over the hose and let the water suck the rest of the sock into the hose as we vacuumed the pool by hand in the water. W also put skimmer socks over the returns. The debris we vacuumed up was definitely dirt and pollen. And since we bypassed the pump with all the debris, we no longer got that back into the pool after we were done.
