Or glue it all together on a very thin metal backing plate?

Yeah sandstone will be tough to glue alone. You will need some kind of backer plate to fasten it all together with. Or maybe look into having anotherone made perhaps

    Re: Glueing Rock together

You might try Gorilla Glue. I've used it on concrete and stone. It may not look perfect after gluing but is should be pretty strong.

    Gorilla Glue

You can get it at Walmart or the big home improvement centers.

I'll go the Gorilla Glue route + will add back support with either metal or hard plastic... let's see what I'll find laying around - thanks for everybody's suggestions.

    Ditto on landscape block adhesive.

Made for stone and wet applications.

Then maybe some underside blocking with strips of brick or granite

I used that landscape block adhesive on some walls and if I remember it was white. The gorilla glue is a polyurethane adhesive and dries semi clear.
