Spa wall coping job well done? Your opinion please - pics

Selected white natural stone coping for our spa wall. Before he grouted, it matched the white deck perfectly. When installer from pool tile co. was finished, coping was no longer bright white. He used dark gray grout and grout is cracking where it meets the pool deck.

Do you think they should have used white grout without me having to specify it? I have existing white grout everywhere else there is wall tile.

What do you think?

Looks to me like they were lazy. Instead of cutting the travertine and making very thin grout joints, they made wide joints to adjust for the curves instead of cutting the coping. Very amateur job IMO. What you can do is a totally different question. What did they state they would do in the contract? Did you view any of there previous work or references?

I think what UnderWaterVanya means is that they should probably replace the tile and make it right. Do you happen to have any pics of the tile before they started?

Yes, the dye from the grout can stain the stone. The stone should have sealed before the grout to maintain the white color.

Contract was basic, was to install coping, no details. I viewed many pictures of their work on their website. They can bid jobs up to one million dollars, they do tile (floor, pool, etc) for the big strip casinos and small jobs like grandma's kitchen.

I have a brochure from manufacturer showing this tile with a picture, that's it. Thanks to each and every one of you for your time and opinion. I will wait a few more days to contact the tile company again. Last time, couple months ago, the boss came out and said they would regrout it for $60, and I never heard back from him. Sent him an email last week which got his attention, offered to come out and "fix that grout".

Can you take and post a picture from further back?

You don't have an issue with grout getting all over the stones, and needing to be clean, correct?

The issue you have is grout color, correct?

I agree with previous poster that they *should* have cut each stone individually such that grout lines are much smaller and of uniform thickness. Had they done that the little "leftover" piece at the end (where the crack is) would have been bigger. With carefull measuring and calculating they could cut down each stone a little bit more and not have to use the small piece.

If you did this yourself, i would say good job and mean it. I would say hey next time do XYZ and it will be perfect. To pay a "professional" for this work is not acceptable in my book. However i got some sub par work in my pool build from professionals, so i know even if you do your due dilligence it can still happen.
