I am assuming that the part of the ladder that is stuck in on the deck?

PB Blaster does a great job of loosening rusted parts. Available at your local hardware or auto parts store.

Can you post a picture of the ladder and cups? If the cups have a wedge, then the wedge needs to be pushed down. PB blaster, as mentioned, can help loosen stuck parts.

Sometimes a rubber hammer can help. Sometimes you have to remove the treads so that you can rotate the rails separately while lifting.

Sorry, yes the parts that are stuck are the rails in the concrete deck. This ladder has been in place for 21 summers. I will get a pic in the am.
Thanks for the ideas..will give them a try!!

Is there a reason that the ladder needs to come out now?

If you have aluminum cups, then they are probably very corroded, as they become a sacrificial anode to pretty much everything else on the bond wire. In some cases, you will have to cut the cups out of the deck to get the rails out. You could also cut the rails flush with the deck if all else fails.

I want to get the ladder out because it has rusted areas, at & below the water line, & I have a new ladder to replace it with.
We still have had no luck getting it out. I have a pool guy coming out first of the week to do it for us.
Thanks so much for the responses.

I've never tried it but have thought about using a car jack and a 4x4 post on our railings. I've never had a need to take them out since the cover installs around them.
32K in ground vinyl pool installed in the early 1990s
1.5 HP Centurion pump installed in the September of 2012, replaced under warranty in August of 2013
2.6 SF Hayward sand filter - age unknown but looks pretty new
Jandy AE-TI heat pump - age unknown but looks new and works great
Caretaker in-floor cleaning system - works, but not well....on my list of things to work on.
Aqua-rite SWG - new in about 2006, T-15 cell replaced in summer of 2012
