How often to change sand in sand filter

Welcome to TFP!

There is no reason to change the sand unless it has become badly clumped.

You should post a complete set of water test results, and describe your water in more detail, milky, murky, white/green/brown, etc.

Welcome to TFP.

The sand is most assuredly not the problem! Contrary to what pool stores say, the sand almost never needs changing.

Your problem is most likely a balance problem. You probably have a nascent algae bloom.

Telling us that chemical levels "seem" good doesn't mean anything. Can you provide a set of numbers?
pH
FC
CC
TA
CH
CYA.

^ What they said about not needing to replace the sand except in rare instances.

Sand filters can use a good cleaning once a year by removing the filter cap and using a garden hose with a gentle flow of water (pump s/b off when doing this). This Post goes into more details on this cleaning process.
