My pool is gunite with a vinyl liner. If my liner needs to be replaced, can I just leave it as gunite?

Are you sure it is gunite, and not pool crete? Pool crete needs a liner over it or it will fail fairly quickly.
Gunite is normally covered with pool plaster. Gunite alone is not waterproof, ie gunite alone will leak. Pool plaster could be added over the gunite if you don't have it already, though that will cost rather more than replacing the liner.

Got the original plans from the installer and it did say gunite but did not mention plaster. If there is plaster would it be better left unlined or does it not matter either way ?
My bet is that liner is there for a reason and not replacing it without knowing that reason could be VERY troublesome.
