We believe that our pool is leaking and we have some hints as to where. We need help to decide what to do next. We haven't opened the pool yet because we want to make the best use out of our money. Opening the pool this year is the subject of another thread cause it ain't gonna be easy.
The pool is large, 22 feet by 44 feet with about 44,000 gallons. It is concrete and was built in about 1983. Last year was a record year for the weather and for our water bill. We continuously added water to the pool. The temperature was over 90 degrees much of the summer and over 100 for a number of days and our humidity levels were much lower than normal. Rainfall was at record lows. We were unsure about the leakage because of the weather.
This year, we have rain every week, plenty of it and the soil does not dry out between rains. The pool level doesn't change from a level about a foot below the skimmers. The bottom drain is turned off but is not plugged. We suspect leaks in the corners and seams between the walls and the walls and the bottom. This is an old pool. Our reasoning is that the level stays put from the pressure of the ground water. The water table was much lower last year. We hope that the water lines to and from the pool are not involved, but we can't rule it out.
We need advice on 2 levels. First, can we determine if the pool leaks, ourselves? Do we need to open the pool in order to test it?
Second, how do the experts here at TFP feel about methods to repair a leaking pool, if the problem is the pool and not the lines going to and from the pump.
