    heater - 100 ft from pump/filter

    Good morning,

Just put in an above ground pool last summer and now are installing a gas heater for our 16*26 above ground pool BUT the filter/pump is about 100ft away from the main gas line. While we could have the gas line brought out- it is VERY expensive to do this so it was suggested that we install the gas heater close to the gas line, and simply run some Tigerflex hose from the heater back to the pump/ filter. Anybody done this? is there too much stress on the pump?

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

    Welcome to TFP!

Running water from the pump out 100' and back 100' will require a different kind of pump than most above ground pools use. Long plumbing runs like that require a high head pump, while most above ground pumps are low head pumps. You might be lucky and have a medium head pump, which will kind of work, though the efficiency will go way down. But trying that will a low head pump will cause problems.

How can I tell if it is a medium head pump?

A heater bypass would help so you are only pushing as much as the heater needs to work properly. This would help minimize the head loss in that line.

Plus putting in flex is expensive. So is there any reason you can't use larger ridged PVC lines?

Off the basic subject but a run off 100' (underground?) may noticeably reduce your heat gain.

    Re: heater - 100 ft from pump/filter

Would it be cheaper to install a propane tank, convert the heater to propane heater, and install it near the pool as opposed to 200 feet of pipe and all the associated heat loss and pump issues?

    Just an idea.

I would try to get better quotes on running that gas line (or DIY) - In the long run that might be less expensive than 200ft of pipe and associated heat losses.
