Hey everyone... I just bought a house that has a pool, so I'm glad I found this board. Thanks in advance for your help, and your patience, with the n00b. 
I seem to have the basics of the chemistry straightened out, thanks to a good pool store. (Apparently that's rare, based on the various "pool stored" posts I see here.) Started out with a yucky green pool -- previous owners turned off the pump and left it that way for almost a month -- but the store only had me add liquid chlorine and a small pouch of algaecide... crystal clear blue water for less than 20 bucks altogether. So far they've not tried to sell me anything expensive, so I guess I lucked out there.
I'll be asking some questions about heating, but I'll post those in the appropriate thread.
