    Screened porch for 45x12 pool?

After nixing the idea of a $5000 pool fence around our pool for the kids- we're now thinking about having a screened "porch" build around/over our pool. Our backyard has lots of trees that are nearly hanging over the pool. The pool is 45'x12' with a kickout for the steps and sitting bench at the deep end. I'm thinking about an actual roof with shingles that will handle a snow load, and have lots of skylights, then screened panels all around. Then have a kickout to tie into the house's sliding door and have room for our patio table.

Here are some pics- We would take down the exisiting screened porch, pull the bushes, and have the screens run down where the white rocks are- then a kickout/room ties into house and a wide section to cover the steps.

    Thoughts?

Doesnt seem too complex, I dont know about tieing in roof lines or whatnot.

Are you trying to keep kids out or tree/yard debris?

Similar things are done in the deep south, mainly Florida, routinely without the roof. You'll have two problems. First, you'll need to heat the pool because it won't have the sun doing it. Second, you'll probably have to build the structure bigger than you think because the backfill around the pool won't be suitable for a foundation for the structure.

Trying to keep kids, dog, and tree debris out.

Yes, pool is heated, that's a natural gas furnace on it

    I didn't think about the backfill/foundation issue.

We're initially thinking about sissor rafters to keep the space open, shingled roof and skylights. Then the sides will be frame posts with screen. If it's too dark, could always use some heavy duty lights.

Like JohnT mentioned... you'll need footers around the perimeter to support the screen cage.

We're also thinking about those snow-rated screen enclosures- they have clear windowed roofs, but with screened sliding doors. Maybe a hybrid of the clear roof, but just screens on the sides to keep the budget down. We don't have $50k for a pool enclosure. Maybe $20k......

Have you completely nixed the auto cover on tracks idea? It should fall below your budget.

Hi zimm, we are thinking about doing this exact thing. We are in Maryland (Baltimore City)and don't have a pool yet, but have mosquitoes, critters, leaves, etc. i was also thinking about a louvre system for the ceiling, or glass with shade cloth somehow.

It would be nice to have something like a 3 season room - screens in the summer, glass in the fall, late spring. But that wouldn't break the bank!

Did you end up building something screened?

    Thanks,

Not yet. Still learning to use the pool. Might just live with it and redo our current screened porch.

Ah, we were going to do a screened/3 season porch and then started to think about a pool. It just seemed to make sense to combine the 2 - less permits that way, maybe Well, have fun with the pool!
