Need new pump and filter for 33' round w/54" walls AG

Please Help!!! Pool was installed 3 years ago with a 1.5 HP pump and a Black Diamond filter (don't know size, label wore off). The filter never seemed to work well. Filter was always dirty (we cleaned often) and pool was never clear. We've seen smaller pools with bigger filters than ours and often thought we needed a bigger filter and/or pump.

So, long story short...Vacuum sucked up a pair of goggles and the pump no longer works. We would like to replace entire system but aren't sure what size pump/filter we need. Local stores only want to sell us what they have in stock and we are a bit leery since we feel "taken" by seller of our pool.

What size pump/filter should we get? We don't have a preference of sand or cartridge. Whatever will work the best.

What happened to the pump when it sucked up the goggles that caused it to quit?
What make and/or model is the pump?

I hate to see you change the pump if it's something easy to fix because it's about the right size for your pool.

Can you post pictures of the filter? The equipment may not be the problem.

The pump is "toast". It "burnt" up so to speak. My husband is an electrician and took it to a local installer and they came to the same conclusion. We have thrown it away along with the filter. We are starting fresh and need guidance.

For that size pool you should look at a 1 hp up-rated pump (i suggest a 2-speed model) and either a 4 sqft sand filter (Pentair SD-80 or equal) or a 200 or 300 sqft cartridge filter.
