Dumb question but is there any reason to use algeacide on top of your chlorine at initial startup or throughout the season as preventive maintenance? I think just chlorine should work fine without correct?

Neighbor has an algae problem (just opened pool) told him to go to shock value based off of chart here at TFP. He seems convinced he must use algaecide as well.

Thoughts?

Correct. Chlorine alone is fine ... and algaecide will not remove existing chlorine, it just tries to aid in preventing it (which adequate FC does just fine).

If they want to spend the extra $, it will not hurt anything, but it also will not help anything if adequate FC is used ... now if they are lazy and not keeping up the FC, then it might help.

You are correct. My pool has not had anything put in it for three years but muriatic acid, sodium hypochlorite, and trichlor pucks, and it's been algae-free and balanced every day of that.

Let him waste his money. You'll just get frustrated trying to convince him. Because, you know, that kid at the pool store is, like, a pro.
