    High Amonia levels

We have a 12000 AG Oval pool that we are converting from Baquacil to Chlorine. When we had the water tested at the pool store today.(our test kit has been ordered not here yet) we were told we had high Amonia levels and could either spend a lot of money on chemicals or drain our pool. Anyone have this issue when converting?

    Welcome to TFP!

I wonder why they said ammonia. It isn't normal to test for ammonia, nor would it make sense for ammonia to be present in your pool. Ammonia has nothing to do with a baqua conversation, though there is a little merit to the rest of what they said. Converting from baqua to chlorine does take a significant amount of chlorine, much of which you can avoid needing if you replace most or all of your water. However, replacing water also has costs and some risks. (How big a risk depending on what kind of pool you have and how high your local water table is.) For most situations, using chlorine to do the conversion is the least expensive approach.

It will help us a lot if you'll fill out the signature. If you have a small kiddie pool, it may be cheaper to just drain it. If it's a vinyl lined monster, you can't drain it all without risking damage to the liner. It also makes a difference if you're filling it from a well.
